Cable Bay (New Zealand)

Cable Bay is an award winning winery and restaurant situated on the stunning west coast of Waiheke Island. began with the vision to hand-craft wines from the highest quality fruit, grown in small lot vineyards located in the most desirable places for their respective varietals. We have selected two locations within New Zealand – Waiheke Island and Marlborough – that we believe are able to produce exceptional wines.

Our first vineyard was planted on Waiheke Island in 1998 with Chardonnay and Bordeaux varieties. Now we grow more than 10 different varieties across New Zealand including Syrah, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.

Our very first Chardonnay produced in 2002 won the gold medal at the prestigious International Wine Challenge in London, in a competition involving more than 40,000 bottles of wine from around the world. Since this inaugural vintage, we have devoted ourselves to producing styles that surprise, satisfy and excite wine-lovers around the world, evolving our vines and techniques along the way.

Our estate-owned vineyards in Marlborough are located in the highly-regarded sub-region of the Awatere Valley. Cable Bay has created a range of vibrant, fruit-driven single varietal wines, which reflect the unique terroir of the Awatere Valley.

We have two vineyards with undulating terraces leading down to the Awatere River, one of which features high-density planting (4,600 vines per ha). These low yielding vines produce wines with amazing depth and intensity – reflecting this distinctly special grape-growing area.

Cable Bay takes an Old World approach and combines it with New World techniques – from shoot-thinning and green harvest in the vineyard, to hand-plunging, whole-bunch pressing and even foot-stomping in the winery. We offer varietals that are perfectly suited to each well-renowned wine region and our estate owned vineyards are closely managed to ensure that the highest quality fruit expresses the unique site it was grown in – an artistry that the very best winemakers strive to achieve.

As an accredited member of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand, we cherish our status as leaders in producing premium wine whilst using viticultural and winemaking practices that protect the environment. All the wines wearing our trusted Cable Bay label have been made with the same integrity, pride and skill and we continue to this date our hands-on approach to viticulture and winemaking.

In January 2007 we opened the doors to our stunning facility on Waiheke Island that includes the winery, cellar door, Verandah, function facilities and an award-winning dining room. Our own private art collection from acclaimed New Zealand artists is on permanent display and Cable Bay Vineyards has become an established destination venue, cultivating an enviable reputation for our spectacular views, outstanding food and stunning wines, with an unrelenting focus on quality and service. We have plenty to be proud of at Cable Bay Vineyards and we can’t wait to share it with you.
